AMC 258 Serpentine Belt Conversion

A while back I upgraded my alternator to a 130 Amp from a 1994 Ford Mustang 5.0 After I did this, my belts tended to squeek no matter how tight I got them. When I put the 258 in to replace the 304 V8, I kept the alternator. In order to shut my jeep up, I decided I'd like to run serpentine belts. After some research, I found that AMC put serpentines on their engines around 1984+. I went to the junkyard and found everything I needed.

Serpentine Belt - 1984 jeep cj7 with serpentine belt 258 engine with AC
New Upper Radiator hose - You may need one, depending on what you have now

pulleys
The hardest work is swapping all the pulleys. Rent/buy a tool and have at it. It took me two trips to the junk yard to get them all. I got really sweaty and dirty. Air tools would be REALLY handy for this.
Change the Water Pump!
I put on a new water pump. It turns in the opposite direction with the serpentine setup, so you can't just swap the pulleys for this! If you don't change it, you'll end up doing bad things to your engine.
Alternator
The 94 mustang alt comes with a correct serpentine pulley for this setup. I just put it back on. I also cut the bracket and widened in a couple of places so I can just bolt a new one on any time. If you're using a stock alternator, just bolt it up. To swap the pully on the alt, get a friend with an impact wrench to change it for you. It takes a few seconds that way.
Air Conditioner pump
I put the complete pump and bracketry on my engine. It will become my on board air compressor in the future. Test the clutch by putting 12V+ to the lead and brounding the pump.
Idler Pulley
The idler pulley can be challenging. I had to modify my bracket a bit since I have a 4.0 head. I didn't bolt the brackets to the intake manifold at all, and had to grind down the aluminum arm a bit to make it fit around the valve cover. You can't have a temperature sensor on the thermostat housing anymore for the 4.0 head. It'll bolt right on if you have a 258 head, so no worries. You may want to replace the pulley bearing while you're in there. I believe it needs to be pressed in.
New Belt Pick up a new belt from the store. The alt and the power steering pump need to be lose to fit the belt. I tighten the alternator as much as I can and then tighten the power steering pump, since the mechanism works easier that way. NO MORE SQUEAKS. My belt was a touch loose for a little while, because I didn't have the alt tightened all the way originally.

ENJOY!
