Adding Intermittent wipers to your CJ

I installed intermittent wipers in my CJ-7. This came about because I was pretty unhappy with the quality of the replacement wiper switch I'd purchased. I was poking around a wagoneer and I noticed what a better quality switch was installed. It's a pretty easy mod. The hardest part is finding an appropriate wagoneer to get parts from. After installation, I had no more wiper issues for the next few years until I sold the jeep.

Parts:

Intermittent 4 wire wiper motor. (I got mine from 4wdh new)
Intermittent wiper switch and relay box from a mid 80s Grand Wagoneer.

Short HowTo

Hunt down a Grand Waggy in the Upull. Pop out the guage cluster by removing the little screws. You should be able to get to all the wiring in that part of the dash now. Pull off the wiper knob and remove the small nut holding the switch on. It looks just like the CJ wiper knob... Now follow the wiring on the switch back a few inches of wire to find a small black box with wires coming out of it. This is the wiper relay box. Gently pull the switch and the box away from the harness. You may need to cut some wireties or electrical tape. Now cut the wires that connect the relay box and switch to the harness as close to the harness as you can. I believe there is also a ground wire somewhere in there too. Now you have the controls.
Obtain a 4 wire intermittent wiper motor. There are also 4 wire non-intermittent motors out there. Make sure it's intermittent. Replace your current wiper motor with the new one and run the wires down into the dash like the old one. Remove the old wiper switch from your dash. Now put the new one in place. You should still be able to get to the wires from the relay box and switch as well as the power connector from the old swith. I have a Centech harness so this may be easier for me than you. Now play with the meter and figure out which wire goes where. I hooked mine up a year ago and it only took me around 5 mins of playing to find the right combination. It helps if you figure out which wire does what to the motor first. As I remember, 1 is low speed, 1 is high speed, 1 is feedback, and one is park. Now use the meter to find which is power, low speed and high speed. The last two wires may be connected in either order to feedback and park. It worked either way for me just fine. Now crimp everything together in the right order and enjoy your much improved wiper control and that nice switch.
