What is the deal with TQFP ZIF sockets?

12 March, 2009 (19:21) | Toys

qfp socketMost ZIF sockets aren’t exactly cheap, but TQFP sockets are in the range of insanely stupid pricing. I’m pondering a TQFP programmer that I can pop the chips into, but most of these little guys are $150 or so. I asked Bunnie, one of the more hardware savvy people I’ve met about it – and he came up with a place that has them for a mere $50. $60 if you want the clamshell stye. Given the hours of searching I put into it, I thought I’d share this one.

I would definitely be interested in this programmer. Also I do a lot of Automotive ecu programing (Tuning)
for extra cash around here and was wondering if you knew where i might find a new eprom burner that
matches this one ( Batronix BX40 Bagero ) but maybe a little cheaper?

Comment from cheap? really?

I run into your website while looking for a ZIF socket adapter for the Atmega640/1280/2560 family MCU. the socket is TQFP 100. Emulation offers their socket adapter for $258.10 direct, while Future Electronics offers the same from Yamaichi for $61.95. guess what, Newark offers a similar socket from Wells CTI for $150 . I wonder how Emulation can possibly survive the competition.

you can check them out here:

Future Electronics:

Newark: http://www.newark.com/wells-cti/3014-100-6-08/socket-ic-zif-tqfp-100way/dp/54M2614

I haven’t done a thorough investigation to compare the products of these two companies, but my experience really convince me to check out Yamaichi first in the future. ZIF adapters for TQFP and QFP sockets’ price range is indeed in the range of insanity. hope this help anyone who gets to this website looking for socket.
